A Librarian's Generous Gift

Every year, we create a video for the Columbus Metropolitan Library Foundation's annual Celebration of Learning event. This year, the event was held at the new Whitehall Branch located on East Broad Street, which opened in April 2015.

The new branch offers an expanded Homework Help Center, a drive-up window, more than 70 public computers, touchscreen TVs and iPads, a fireplace, a recording studio, five meeting rooms, and more.

A unique feature of the Whitehall branch is the Carol Snowden Children's Room.

Carol Snowden was a former librarian at the old Whitehall branch for 30 years. During her career, she led story time for children at the Whitehall branch, visited public schools to read to kids, and created pre-school programs for Head Start. She passed away in 2008 from ovarian cancer.

In her will, she left a gift of $750,000 for the specific purpose of building a children's area in the Whitehall branch library.

Her generous gift was a shock not only to the Columbus Library, but to her family and friends as well. According to family and friends, she lived a simple life. She never married or had children, but loved sharing her passion for books by making a career as a children's librarian. Unbeknownst to her family, friends, and colleagues, Carol saved more than a million dollars over several years of frugal spending and wise investments. The majority of her savings went to the library branch she called home.

The children's area named in her memory will be used as a space for children of all ages to gather, learn, and become inspired through reading and other activities.
